Terms of use
The terms on which LegitSonar is made available.
LegitSonar is free to use and requires no account. Using it means accepting the terms below.
What is offered
LegitSonar publishes automated trust assessments of websites and lets anyone request a new one. It is provided free of charge, with no registration, no contract and no service commitment.
The nature of a score
A score is an opinion formed by software from technical signals. It is not professional advice, not a certification, and not a statement that a business is honest or dishonest.
A high score does not mean a site is safe: it means the signals examined were unremarkable at the time of the scan. A low score does not mean the operator is a criminal: it commonly means a domain is new, its owner is not identifiable, or its infrastructure is shared with sites that have behaved badly. Both can be true of an entirely legitimate business.
Decisions about your money remain yours. Use a score as one input among several, and read the findings rather than the number alone — the methodology explains what is weighed.
Acceptable use
You may use LegitSonar for any lawful purpose. You may not:
- use the scanner to generate traffic against a third party's site — it exists to inform a decision, not to load someone else's server;
- attempt to circumvent the rate limits, or automate requests at a volume that degrades the service for others;
- scrape the site wholesale; the crawl directives in
robots.txtare the boundary, and/api/is outside it; - present a LegitSonar score as a certification, endorsement, or as anyone's judgement but an automated one;
- use reports to harass, defame or threaten the people behind a website.
Using the scanner
Requesting a scan causes this server to send requests to the domain you name: DNS and WHOIS lookups, a TLS handshake, and a single fetch of the home page. Do not request scans of infrastructure you have no business touching. Requests are rate limited per visitor and per domain, and the requesting IP address is recorded — see the privacy policy.
Content and reuse
The underlying facts — registration dates, certificate issuers, DNS records — are public and nobody's property. The presentation of this site, its wording, design and code, is not.
You may quote or link to a report, including in a complaint, a review or a news story. Please cite the domain and the date of analysis, since a report is a snapshot and scores change. Republishing the corpus in bulk, or rebuilding a competing index from it, is not permitted.
Availability
The service may be unavailable, and reports may be incomplete or out of date. There is no uptime commitment. Features may change or be withdrawn.
Liability
LegitSonar is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose or accuracy of the assessments.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, no liability is accepted for loss arising from reliance on a score or a report, including financial loss from dealing — or declining to deal — with any website. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death, personal injury or fraud.
If you operate a site and believe a report is inaccurate, the remedy offered is correction, promptly and free: see Contact.
Law and changes
These terms are governed by French law. Nothing in them removes the protections a consumer has under the law of their own country of residence.
They may be amended; the date at the top of this page shows when they last were. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the amended terms.
